Behsat Üvez is both composer, singer and multi-instrumentalist. He plays the baglama (saz), cura, tar, kabak kemane (knee viol), violin, cümbüs (fretless lute), ud, mandolin en various percussion instruments.

From 1976 to 1984 Behsat Üvez was an instrumentalist and soloist with the Turkish State Ensemble, and from 1971 to 1989 he was also musical leader of the folkloristic dance and music ensemble Tüfem in Ankara. With these two groups he travelled all over the world, propagating Turkish traditional music.

Since 1989 he has been working as a musician and music teacher in the Netherlands. Inspired by the lively music scene in his new hometown Groningen, he has gradually directed his attention to modern music.

In 2002 Üvez founded the Turkish-Dutch ensemble Baraná, together with Steven Kamperman. Since 2009 this ensemble receives structural support by Dutch Government. Together they also play in the Balkan Sax/Beat Group Carlama Orkestar.

Steven Kamperman

Steven Kamperman is composer and plays various reed instruments, a.o. clarinets, saxophones and racket.

His remarkable debut in 1991 as a professional musician with Trio Hip (saxophone and two trombones) was awarded with a prize at the prestigious Middelsee Jazz Concours. In 1998, his group 1 Step 7 Seas was invited for the first Young VIP tour, performing at all major Dutch Jazz venues. In 2000 the group performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival and the SJU-Jazz Festival, featuring the French master violin player Dominique Pifarély.

In 2002 Kamperman founded the Turkish-Dutch ensemble Baraná, together with Behsat Üvez. Since 2009 this ensemble receives structural support by Dutch Government. Together they also play in the Balkan Sax Group Carlama Orkestar. Occasionally Kamperman can be heard also with his special project Carrousel, playing modern modal improvised music in a classic acoustic quartet setting.

Since 1994, Kamperman is a programmer for the succesfull Music: World Series, and was asked as a guest programmer for the Migrating Music Festival 2005. He is guest lecturer non-western improvisation at the Conservatory Utrecht.
