Sarap | Baraná Quintet

Starting october 2009, Baraná Quintet will bring the new program Sarap (Wine), celebrating texts by the famous Persian poet Omar Khayyám. Recurrent motive in the work of Khayyám is the importance of Wine, according to him an important way to honour the Creation.

'What do you want? Being in a café and exploring your conscience, or kneeling in a moskee without your soul being there?'

The unorthodox Khayyám teases his audience, and almost seems to promote intoxication. But at the same time he wrestles with human dilemma's and the essence of God with integrity. His almost humanist poetry is the thread for a program about the mysterie of our existence, love and the importance of 'carpe diem'.

Since 2002, Baraná has gained international praise with a mix of Turkish tradition, exciting new compositions and playful Dutch improvisation. The band celebrates the vitality of the meeting. In these meetings, Baraná succeeds in combining the strength of tradition with the fresh approach of modern music.

An interesting feature of Baraná is the broad taste of the leaders Behsat Üvez and Steven Kamperman. Their basic ingredients may be Turkish and Dutch, the resulting flavours surpass all categories. Especially striking is the exciting communication between the musicians. The music can go anywhere anytime.

Baraná performs in various configurations. In Baraná Quintet, Üvez and Kamperman meet with virtuoso accordeonist Bart Lelivelt, German bass player and improviser Meinrad Kneer and drummer Sebastian Demydczuk from Poland. Magic songs and spectacular grooves go along with teasing improvisations.
