Baraná & Co

The Turkish / Dutch ensemble Baraná & Co is the result of a special composition assignment at the Music Meeting 2002 to Turkish singer and multi-instrumentalist Behsat Üvez and the Dutch clarinet player Steven Kamperman.
Using their duo called Baraná as a nucleus, they formed the group Baraná & Co for this occasion. Live recordings of this concert (Baraná & Co - live at the Music Meeting, LopLop records LLr 01) received raving reviews in the national and international press. In Baraná & Co they are surrounded by a word-class selection of improvising musicians:
  • cello wizard Ernst Reijseger,
  • Iranian percussion-expert Afra Mussawissade,
  • Balkan specialist Monique Lansdorp on violin
  • Kees Adolfsen on trombone,
  • Mehmet Uludag on saz and vocals and
  • the astonishing Cengiz Baytimur on kaval, mey, ney and zurna.
Texts of the Turkish Humanist-poet Yunus Emre inspire a voyage through Turkish traditional scales, exciting rhythms, witty improvisations and sounds of contemporary music.
