Xenopolis, an ode to Istanbul, is a metaphor for the unlimited possibilities and fears of modern times, representing the conflict between the urban space and the individual. Istanbul – long referred to as ‘The City’ – is a mysterious and versatile metropolis, on the border between Europe and Asia. Hypermodern malls are located next to age-old deteriorated ruins. Huge billboards with tempting starlets form the background for traditional street food markets.
The new show by Turkish/Dutch worldjazz group Baraná is inspired by this enchanting, esoteric city. Baraná joins forces with extrovert, upcoming star Ceylan Ertem, in seeking to identify the differences and similarities within the youths of different continents and cultures from East and West.

Ceylan Ertem, a determined, experimental singer, got her first record deal in 2000, with her group Anima (Sony/BMG). Her first solo album is due for release in March 2010. Ertem combines a phenomenal and creative vocal power, with grooves and inspiration from Asian folk music. Her voice can be both strong and vulnerable and her characteristic and daring lyrics explore such topics as the fears that dominate her daily life.

Baraná has gained international praise for mixing traditional Turkish music with exciting new compositions, whilst improvising with playful Dutch overtones. The broad taste of Baraná’s frontmen, Behsat Üvez and Steven Kamperman, include Turkish and Dutch overtones, but the finished pieces develop into something unique and which truly surpass any stereotyping.
Baraná performs in various arrangements. In Xenopolis Üvez and Kamperman are joined by Iranian percussionist Afra Mussawissade, guitar virtuoso Jeff Sopacua and cellist Ernst Reijseger.
